Usually, it is mandatory if you are 45 years old and above.

I think besides age, it also depends on your medical background.

Yes it is mandatory for people above 45 years of age or people who have fallen ill or suffered a sickness in the recent past. For them there is a need to undergo a medical test.

The exemption from medical tests does not mean you can sweep your health problems under the carpet. You will still be needed to make a statement about your health condition in the application form. If you hide a health condition, it can have severe consequences on your insurance cover. Roughly, 2-3 % of claims end up in the trash due to this every year.

Medical tests are dependent on the age, sum insured opted and declaration made on proposal form.
