Medico - Legal Certificate also called as MLC is required in cases of accident or an incident which has lead to injury or death.
Hospitals have a MLC register wherein accident/ assault/poisioning/ burn cases are registered by hospital authorities and submitted to the local police station.
Based on the report, police visits the patient to verify details mentioned in MLC.
If there is subsequent death of patient or if the relatives wish to take a legal action against the offender, then based on MLC a FIR is registered under the relevant IPC section.
